Dating on a Budget in Whatcom County
Looking ahead to taxes, there might be those of you who want to enjoy your sweetie’s or family’s company, but know that April 15th is looming. For all of you feeling frugal, and even those who go beyond frugal to downright cheap, this Bliss List is for you!
Slashed Rates on Cheap Dates:
Your Guide to Frugal Fun
Before leaving your home, decide if there is any way not to spend money on gas. Might you bike or walk or bus to your date? For Dan and me, it’s easy: We drive a Volt and can go all the way from the lake to Dutch Mother’s Restaurant in Lynden and back on one charge without burning one drop of gas.
2. Go Where the Snacks Roam Free
We all know that Costco has free snacks, but as a recovering foodie, I prefer the ones at Trader Joe’s. They are so creative with their mash-ups of their various products. At least half the time, I leave with the items they are tasting that day. The only thing I can’t figure out is why theirs always tastes better than mine. Hey, I said I was a foodie, not a cook!
Tip: If there is a treat you are pondering, but have never tried it before, they will very cheerfully rip open the bag and give you a taste. No obligation.
3. Rock Out to The Stones.
If there is a body of water and a supply of skippng stones nearby, Dan reverts back to being a boy. Man, that boy can skip! He chooses only the flattest, roundest stones and can skip them over water as if it were glass. The tranquil waters at Birch Bay make for one of his favorite skipping spots, where we enjoy counting the skips. His record is 9 and I challenge anyone to beat him.
4. What’s a Date without Movie Night?
After snacking and skipping, it’s time for an almost-free movie at the Regal Barkley or the Pickford. For the price of one movie, you can see a movie a day for the whole month! That’s potentially 31 movies! What’s our secret? MoviePass, which is like a gym membership for movies.
When Dan and I first heard about MoviePass, we thought it was too good to be true. We can vouch that it is the real deal. Just download the app on your phone and pay your year’s worth at $9.95 per month (sometimes less). Shortly a red MoviePass credit card shows up in your mail. Because of MoviePass we were really boned up on this year’s Oscar Picks. We also enjoy walking into movies fearlessly, knowing we’re free to walk out if they’re not Oscarworthy.
