Desserts are fun.
Weird desserts are even funner, just like that word.
Below is a list of 4 weird, yet yummy, desserts to be had in Whatcom County.
How about a beer-infused truffle made with Russian Imperial Stout from Kulshan Brewery? I’ve just described Evolve Chocolate’s Fig and Balsamic Truffle. Instead of a brick and mortar store, Evolve has a pop-up lounge. Their next lounge will be at Artifacts Café and Wine Bar on the corner of Flora and Grand during the Art Walk on August 5th. You can also find them at the Bellingham Farmer’s Market. www.evolvetruffles.com . Check out the cool video by SpicerDent Productions while you are on their website.
Cookie Legs. The Chocolate Rockette at the Silver Reef Casino Steak House in Ferndale is a dark chocolate cake with a molten milk chocolate center. But that’s not even the good part. On top of the cake is an almond brittle skirt with protruding dancer’s legs kicking up a storm. She looks like she has tripped and is falling into the cake. It’s slightly disturbing, like the Edward Gorey of desserts. Who thinks of these things?
S’more Pizza. Yes, I went there. Pizza + S’mores, what a great mash-up. La Fiamma uses a homemade graham cracker shell, fills it with caramel and Belgian chocolate, then tops it with marshmallows. For years, this gooey concoction was my go-to birthday cake substitute. Though you don’t have to wait for your birthday tro enjoy this wood-fired delight. La Fiamma, 200 E Chestnut, www.lafiamma.com
Vertical Mud Pie.
For those of you who also like mud pie—I know you are out there…I can see the Oreo crumbs on your lips—mud pie as we know it is a slurry on a plate. Back at the Silver Reef Casino Steak House, the mud pie stands in a silo. The towering 2 layers of cookie crumbles sandwiched between homemade coffee and vanilla ice cream are super dense. I had to literally stab it with my fork, repeatedly, to break it down.
Since I am of the opinion that dessert should come first, if you have a favorite, fun dessert around town, please share.
