If you have traveled anywhere outside of Whatcom County, you know that feeling upon your return. The feeling you get when driving past Lake Samish through the freeway tunnel of trees. The feeling of flying over Bellingham and seeing how green it is. The feeling of appreciation that you get to call this place home. You know this is the best place to live, and so do others who are not as fortunate. Read on for the latest “Best Awards” including two on our horizon which are vying for Guinness Book of World Record status.
1. Highest Rated Small Airport in U.S. Out of the country’s 250 busiest U.S. airports in the small hub category, Bellingham was rated #1 with a 93% favorability rating by Phoenix Marketing International. When I arrive from lesser airports, I just want to hug the tarmac.
2. Best Tasting Water in the Pacific Northwest. Just recently I was thinking about how good the water tastes here compared to Monterey, CA, where there are actually particles swirling in your glass and the stuff tastes metallic. I knew we had great water, and that instinct was recently validated. The award given by the AWWA (American Water Works Association) tested water from many different municipalities and crowned Bellingham’s the winner. Swallow that, Everett!
3. Longest Parade of Subarus: June 5th, Birch Bay. Clearly the Subaru is the unofficial car of Whatcom County. You still have a chance to witness history in the making when Birch Bay will take on Moscow, Russia, with their current record of 549 cars. Check-in is at 8:00 am and you can register at birchbaychamber.com. Think about driving your Subaru to victory and meeting Norm Johnson, formerly of the Seahawks, who will sign autographs. Maybe if you ask him nicely, he’ll do so on your bumper.
4. World’s Largest Fruit Shortcake: June 4th, Lynden. The goal is to create a 1,250 foot-long shortcake…or is that a longcake? The Farmers Day Parade starts at 10:30, and concludes around noon, where the shortcake will be created on Front Street between Third and Seventh Streets. That 4-block-long beauty will then be topped with local strawberries, ice cream and whipped cream. After hopefully creaming the current record, you and yours can dive in. Now that’s a food fight I’d like to see!
