Whatcom County is full of unexpected treasures. Here are 3 of ours.
- Sheep in the City. One of our favorite walks is just outside Big Rock Garden. Park in the lot outside the garden and head down the path past the water tower. When the trail gives you choices to make, hug right, through ferns and trees. Suddenly, with no warning, you will be spit out at the Silver Beach Elementary School playground. And on your left is the sweetest little farm, complete with sheep, chickens and an orchard. Nothing like listening to sheep baa-ing to lower your blood pressure. Today the sheep were a bit sheepish or maybe baashful. This is the orchard, anyway… Big Rock Garden Park: 2900 Sylvan St, Bellingham.
2. Thailand in a Windmill. One of our friends/clients turned us on to this gem in Lynden. In the little shopping center, behind the big windmill on Front Street, is a really good Thai place. Overlook the iceberg lettuce starter and head straight for the pineapple fried rice and Prick Khing (#17). As many of you know, I was in Bali, Indonesia 2 years ago and fell in love with the food there. It tastes like a savory version of Thai food. When I took a bite of the rice, it reminded me of food I’d had in Bali. I mentioned this to the waitress and she said that their cooking uses some of the same Balinese spices, as it is northern Thai food. We shall be back, oh, yes, we shall be back. 3. Parking Lot with a View. Anybody else notice there’s a view of Mt. Baker from the Costco parking lot? How many other places in the planet can you buy bulk toilet paper, watch carts overflowing with gallons of milk, and be inspired by thoughts of skiing and hiking on your way to your car in a sea of Canadian license plates and Subarus?
